Not a smoker? There are tons of different ways to enjoy cannabis without smoking it, with more and more methods being explored all the time. 

While smoking cannabis is not as bad for your health as smoking tobacco, it still carries some risk. Smoking anything can irritate the lungs or throat, and for people with asthma or other respiratory ailments, smoking cannabis may not be an option. But nowadays, whether you’re looking to enjoy recreationally or medicinally, there are plenty of methods to get your weed fix. 

Here are a few of our favourite ways, based on different effects:

Vaporizers

The biggest difference between smoking and vaping is that vaping doesn’t burn your cannabis, it heats it up to a certain temperature producing vapour in lieu of smoke. This cuts down on harmful chemicals, but allows cannabinoids and terpenes to take front and centre. With terpenes left intact, vaping is actually thought to enhance the flavour of cannabis. 

There are a number of different types of vapes on the market, including some that use dried cannabis and others that use cannabis extract. 

The greatest advantage to vaping is that it works fast. If you’re looking for immediate action, vaping may be the choice for you. 

Dabs

Like vaping, dabbing produces vapour versus smoke. But that’s about where the similarities end. Dabbing requires a dab ring that’s heated with a butane lighter. Cannabis concentrates are reduced to vapour when it’s dropped on the ring. 

Cannabis concentrates—like resin, shatter and wax—are potent. This makes dabs a great option for those with health problems or those with a high-THC tolerance. If you’ve never dabbed before, we recommend you take it slow. 


Beverages

Cannabis beverages are refreshing and tasty. In fact, we’re such big fans we have a dedicated canna-drinks space in each of our shops that we’ve dubbed The High Bar. There are a slew of reasons why canna-drinks are a great alternative to smoking, but it's the familiar product format that’s the standout. Many of us are used to drinking a beer or cocktail, or cracking open sparkling water on a warm day. 

Familiarity aside, drinks have a relatively quick onset (about 30 minutes), are low calorie and won’t leave you with a hangover. Sounds like a win to us!


Edibles

You can always eat your cannabis! The world of edibles is diverse. Mints, chocolate, gummies, caramels—whatever your poison, there’s a choice for you. 

Edibles can take up to two hours to kick in, but last a little longer than other methods. This is ideal if you’re using cannabis for medical reasons. But it’s not so ideal if you’re new to edibles. Our advice is to follow the old adage, “Start low, go slow.” Many a consumer has been caught unprepared after taking a second edible before the first has taken effect. 


Tinctures and Oils

Cannabis oils are another great alternative to smoking. Like edibles, oils can take up to two hours to take effect. Because of that, we advise those new to cannabis oils to slowly ease their way in. Oils can be added to food and drinks—like your morning coffee or post-workout smoothie—or be taken in a capsule. 

Tinctures are a little different from oils in that a solvent is used to extract the beneficial matter—like cannabinoids and terpenes—from the cannabis plant. Tinctures are dropped under the tongue to dissolve, permeating into the bloodstream. Because of this, they are much more fast-acting than oils. 


Transdermal Patches

For those who are more health and wellness minded, transdermal patches are a fantastic option. While this method doesn’t provide much in the way of a high, it does permeate the skin to offer potential benefits. 

Transdermal patches stick directly to the skin and release cannabinoids at an even and controlled pace over time for a long-lasting—and discreet—effect. Patches are usually available in a variety of single cannabinoids, like THC or CBD, or a divided ratio of cannabinoids, like a 1:3 THC:CBD split. Best of all, patches work while you sleep, so you can expect overnight relief.
